Me and tinnitus

Today telling a new adventure I’m going to talk about tinnitus. Now, for the uninitiated, tinnitus is an internal ear noise. Those who perceive it, in this case me, can hear a buzz, a whistle, a louder or softer noise.

In short, there are various shades of tinnitus … For example, I have tinnitus in my left ear (the one that just doesn’t work) and let’s say that the intensity of the same varies from a light breath (like having a small hair dryer on next to the ear with a very low noise) to have a reactor instead … as if I were under the launch pad of the Apollo X shuttle (let’s put a random number in place of the X I would say 20, because I don’t know how many missions were there but I would avoid the number 13) and the Houston count was under the number 10.

I hope you understand .

In the left ear instead (the one that has the implant) tinnitus is almost never there, maybe there is a whistle every now and then that lasts a few seconds … and then that’s it. The variation on intensity is always there, of course. but they don’t bother.

I learned not to be scared of tinnitus (at first I was afraid there was something wrong with the implant). Unfortunately, they are there and the great thing is that you get used to them, so after a while your brain doesn’t even think about it anymore.

And we come to the typical episode of the sordamaldestra. I was with her husband on the street and was crossing on the stripes, when I hear a loud noise … I exclaim (with my class and elegance) “Oh what a bummer these tinnitus” …. I hear the noise that increases and I put my hands on the ears, because it is a loud noise and it bothers me.

I see the husband looking at me worried … he asks me what happens and I explain that there is this loud noise … I also take off the system to see if it stops (obviously I had crossed the lines and was standing on the sidewalk).

I describe the noise. I see the husband smiling. He tells me “there’s a helicopter over our head”. I raise my head and see this red helicopter-style thing of the fire brigade (which is actually from the TV).

At this point I don’t know whether to laugh or cry (like the time I vacuumed but didn’t turn it on).

Laugh because I hear a noise, I hear the loud noise that bores anyone. In short, for a deaf person, hearing this is a lot.

Crying because how the fuck can you not hear or rather not recognize the sound of a helicopter that you have above your head ????

I start laughing, I try to see the positive side …. but it’s not easy you know. And then I realized who knows what other noises I might have heard, and I blamed the tinnitus (and if there is no one who tells me “we have a helicopter over our head”) .. Poor little tinnitus. I was happier to hear a noise and understand what it was.

And anyway, the air traffic in this city is crazy.
